A leading member of the NPP Prof. Wayo Seini has advocated for the change in name of the party from New Patriotic Party to New Progress Party.
The change according to him was to meet the underlining objective of the founding fathers of the party, adding that the name ‘progress’ meant a lot to Dr. K.A. Busia and that was why he named the party “progress party”
Speaking on Citi FM’s mid day news on Wednesday, Prof. Seini said the party leadership settled on the word patriotic because of a ban placed on the use of old political party names. Since the ban had been lifted, Prof Seini said the party should go back for their old name.
He said progress meant development and with President Kufuor’s current performance in government, it was only proper that the party leadership revert to the name the founding fathers had chosen.
In what could be said to be a rebuttal of the earlier suggestion, a member of the council of elders of the party Mr. Appiah Minka said “names do not mean much.”
He said the progress party was only limited to particular session of the current NPP and would be injurious to adopt such a name. Mr. Minka cited a case where the late Dr. Busia was hooted by some students of the University, but who are now members of the NPP.
He also mentioned the late Peter Ala Adjetey and Sam Okudjeto, now leading members of the NPP but who were opposed to the Progress Party.
He said the decision to change the name of the party at this point in time would be unacceptable.
Prof Wayo Seini is famous in Ghana’s political terrain for flirting with the two major parties in the country.
He was originally a member of the NPP but crossed carpets to the NDC after what he claimed was the poor handling of the Dagbon crisis, by the NPP administration.
Shortly after that, Prof Seini again resigned from the NDC and rejoined his mother party the NPP.
