The Office of the President has described the death of Mr Peter Ala Adjetey, former Speaker of Parliament, as a great loss to the nation.
The death of Mr. Ala Adjetey comes about two weeks after President John Agyekum Kufuor conferred on him a national award - Order of the Star (Member Division) - for his selfless role in the development of the Legislature and the Public Service.
The statement signed by Mr. Andrew Awuni, Press Secretary to the President and Presidential Spokesman, said the whole nation was “saddened by the untimely fall of this great man who served at the highest level with great devotion and commitment and made a great difference in every area that he was involved in”.
"He will be particularly remembered for the fine leadership he provided as the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament during the first term of President Kufuor’s Administration, as indeed, he did in all the other areas he served in after his tenure in Parliament," the statement read.
The statement further expressed the government's condolence to the bereaved family.
Mr Ala Adjetey, 76, the second Speaker of the Parliament in the Fourth Republic, died after a short illness on Tuesday morning at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
He left behind six children and his 75 year-old wife Johanna.
