Some angry persons in the Bolgatanga Municipality have since July 1, 2008 besieged the Upper East office of the Metro Mass Transport (MMT) Company in Bolgatanga to seek explanation over the sudden halt of the company’s Bawku–Accra and Bolgatanga-Accra services.
The group vowed to vandalise property and possibly barricade the regional office of the company if no suitable explanation was given.
They however appealed to the management of the company to restore the services for the sake of the poor.
Management of the Metro Mass Transport recently gave notice that from July 1, 2008, the company would halt services from Bolgatanga to Accra and Bawku to Accra.
Currently, the Metro Mass Transport is in a fierce competition with other transport organizations including the Ghana Private Roads Transportation Union (GPRTU), State Transport Company (STC) and Imperial Transport Service, all of which run only inter-city services, except the Metro Mass Transport which runs intra-city and inter-city services.
Introduction of the inter and intra city services had provided a lot of Ghanaians in the Upper East with safe, reliable and affordable means of transport to the national capital.
Some who have been speaking to our reporters, said though the company was under private management, it had become a national asset and therefore no one person could take a decision that affects a large segment of the Ghanaian population without explanation.
The Upper East Regional Depot Manager of the Metro Mass Transport Company, Stephen Abukari said his office is only acting on the instruction his superiors and had sent a situation report to head office.
"We received a lot of commendations from the public especially the poor and ordinary majority and I am not surprised that they are responding violently to the halt of such important services."
