Head butting referee to face sanction

The Referees Appointment Committee are said to be considering punitive action against FIFA referee Mercy Tagoe for an alleged assault on a player in the nerve racking battle- against- relegation clash between Zaytuna and Real Tamale United on Sunday. The committee said investigations would be swiftly conducted into the matter, and if found culpable, Mercy Tagoe would not escape sanction. Tagoe was alleged to have head butted Gideon Baah a Zaytuna player, when he protested against her decision to allow an equaliser by Real Tamale United. According to him, the ball did not cross the line. His protest was reportedly met with an assault, with Mercy Tagoe head butting him to the ground. Mr. Albert Agbovi, Chairman of the Referees Appointment Committee said he personally spoke to Tagoe before the match, insisting that she would be provoked by the players and advised her to remain calm throughout the game. So if she went contrary to the advice, then she would be dealt with according to the law, Mr. Agbovi added He however said the tapes of the match as well as reports by independent observers will be scrutinised and the appropriate decision would be taken thereafter. Meanwhile, Gideon Baah, last years winner of the MTN Sports Academy said he was surprised with the behaviour of the referee. Zaytuna needed nothing short of victory against RTU to be retained in the Premier league, and were 7 minutes away from achieving that feat. However, a late rally from behind ensured that RTU picked the three maximum points to celebrate their three decades of stay in the premiership. Author: Nathan Gadugah
