Land buyers urged to register their lands

The Chief Lands Registrar, Mr Joseph Owusu-Sarfo, on Thursday advised land purchasers and owners to register such lands quickly in order to avoid costly litigation. Mr Owusu-Sarfo said this at a public forum in Ho as part of the Land Administration Project (LAP). He said other land transactions that should be registered are sub-leases, transfer of old interests, mortgages, gifts, tenancy agreements, probate and will. Mr Owusu-Sarfo said land registration ensures certainty of ownership, establishment of rights of interests, security of tenure, minimizing litigation and access to bank loans. It also facilitates the admissibility of such documents in court where the Commission could be called as witness, better land value, sanity in land administration and investment promotion. "Help us to help you, we want to cut down on the suffering of the people for whom the Commission has prepared a Citizen's charter,” he said. Mr Owusu-Sarfo appealed to those who want to register their lands to avoid middlemen and deal directly with officials of the Lands Commission and seek help from the front desks in such offices. Participants who included chiefs and queen mothers, surveyors and landowners called for more public education to enlighten the public including the rural communities on the importance of land registration. They lauded the establishment of the Regional Lands Registry and called for the establishment such registries in the districts also. GNA
