Asabii: Nobody can downplay NPP achievements

The Minister for Information and National Orientation, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has stressed that no person, party or government would succeed in attempting to play down the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Capitation Grant and the School Feeding Programme, among others, introduced by the NPP Government. He said Ghanaians had fully embraced all these programmes and so it was up to any other government to build on them instead of down-playing them. Addressing Municipal and District Chief Executives, Information Service Department staff and media practitioners at Koforidua, Eastern Region, as part of his nation-wide tour, Asamoah Boateng denied speculations that the Right to Information Bill had been dropped by the Government. He explained that the delay in putting it before Parliament was due to some difficulties, and promised that everything possible was being done to remove bottle necks. The Minister said it was to get things moving that the Citizens' Charter was introduced as an interim measure to check corruption in the system. He assured the newly recruited staff of the Service that arrangements had been concluded to ensure payment of their delayed salaries at the end of this month. Boateng urged the staff of his outfit to be innovative, professional and remain neutral in the discharge of their duties at all times. The Minister encouraged them to build cordial relationships with all people, and desist from discriminating against any political party. He enjoined them to educate the public on Government policies. As to whether it is necessary to compare the achievements of the present and the past regimes, Asamoah Boateng said as a current government, there was the need to compare its achievements with that of the past regimes to see whether it had been able to fulfill the mandate given to it by the electorate. He added that it has to compare also to see whether it is judiciously using the resources of the country, and above all to let the people know how it had fulfilled its mandate as a government. The Eastern Regional Minister, Kwadwo Affram Aseidu, urged personnel of the ISD to remain focused and play their expected roles without fear of intimidation from any quarters.
