Several projects in the Tema Metropolis have been stalled because the metropolitan assembly’s kitty has grown too slim.
The situation has arisen from the creation of the Ashaiman and the Adenta municipalities, putting more strain on the finances of the TMA than usual.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive, David Annan, during an interview with Adom FM explained that the local government laws require existing districts to support new ones created out of them.
In keeping with the provision, he said the Tema Metro gave out GHc30,000 to either of the new municipalities, as well as two months two month salaries for their workers and logistics for their operations.
Whiles the Tema Metro is supporting the new municipalities, Tema residents are angry with the TMA for what they describe as non performance.
Construction work at the main lorry park has been suspended and while drivers are complaining of congestion and difficulties operating in the area, commuters have also been stranded during rainfalls.
Another road that has become a source of headache for the assembly is the main Ashaiman - Kpone road which is in disrepair. Some drivers have threatened not to ply that road and instead use the Aluworks - Tema Oil Refinery road.
This notwithstanding the MCE says efforts are underway to address the problems adding that work on the lorry park will resume before the end of the year.
He said the project was delayed due to non payment of the contractor and appealed to government to expedite payment to enable the contractor complete work on time.
On the many potholes created as a result of the rains, Mr. Annan said the Urban Roads Department has begun minor works on the roads until the funding is ready for the main project to take off.
He however said the positive side of the creation of the new districts is that Tema now has a smaller area to develop.
