Three suspected armed robbers two of them females who hijacked a taxicab at gunpoint on Sunday June 1, 2008, have been arrested.
The three, Akua Dufie, 22, Afia Achiaa, 18, and Kwaku Antwi, 29 are currently being processed for court, the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Inspector Mohammed Yusif Tanko, told journalists at a press briefing on Monday.
According to him, the suspects, and two others who are on the run, planned at Asuofia, a community of the Barekese road in the Ashanti Region, to hijack a car and use it to rob unsuspecting persons of their cell phones, money and other possessions.
On June 1, the police PRO said, the accused persons stopped the driver of taxicab with registration number AS 8801 Y, Peter Obeng at the Sofoline roundabout and asked him to take them to Pak-yi to enable one of them take the mother to hospital.
On their way, the inspector continued, the suspects changed their destination and on reaching Edumansa dispossessed the driver of his cab at gunpoint.
As the victim started shouting for help, the suspects attempted speeding off but the car developed a fault after travelling a short distance. They therefore abandoned it on the outskirts of Darko, a village in the area, and fled into the bush.
The police PRO said soon after, a search party was organized to hunt the suspects, following which the three were apprehended.
According to Inspector Tanko, the suspected robbers had earlier robbed a driver of his taxi at Tarkwa in the Western Region and used it to rob unsuspecting persons of mobile phones and unspecified amounts of money.
He said when that car also developed a fault they abandoned it and fled to Kumasi.
