Cop in minister’s residency attack dies

Superintendent Theophilus Nartey, the police officer who was wounded in a brawl with the assailant who attacked the residence of the Volta Regional Minister, has died. He died on Wednesday night after he had been airlifted to the 37 Military Hospital for further treatment. Sup. Nartey sustained three perforations in his stomach in the brawl last Monday at Mr. Dzamesi's residence and according to eyewitness accounts, his entrails gushed out. He was rushed to the Volta Regional Hospital where doctors operated on him for seven hours after which he was said to have been in stable condition. Sup. Nartey was flown to the 37 Military Hospital for further treatment but he later died. Confirming his death to the Daily Graphic, the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Kwasi Ofori, said Sup. Nartey was flown from Ho to the 37 Military Hospital but he died last night. Sup. Nartey, who lived close to the official residence of the Volta Regional Minister, was called to the residency after the assailant, Agbale Dan Dzikunu, had overpowered the police at the main entrance of the minister's residency and entered. Information available indicates that when he arrived at the residence, the assailant was in the hall of the regional minister and so the officer approached him in an attempt to calm him and thereby get him off the premises. The witness said Sup Nartey came out with the assailant but on reaching outside his (Dzikunu) demeanour suddenly changed; he became violent and in the process he stabbed the officer three times and also hit him on the head with a hammer. In the melee, another constable who was close by shot and instantly killed the assailant after which Sup. Nartey, who was then lying unconscious on the ground and bleeding profusely was rushed to the Volta Regional Hospital. Superintendent Theophilus Nartey, 46, was recently promoted from an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to a full superintendent and was made the Municipal Commander of the Ho Municipal Police Station.
