Mr Bright Oduro, Ashanti Regional Crime Officer of Ghana Police Service, has cautioned taxi drivers operating in Kumasi Metropolis, to be vigilant and cautious of young people who hire their services.
He asked them to refrain from giving their vehicles to “spare drivers” to operate, because some of the youth could be agents of criminals or the spare drivers used their vehicles for criminal activities.
Speaking to Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, after the arrest of a 17-year-old suspect, Kwaku Boakye on Monday, for his alleged involvement in armed robbery, Mr Oduro said the use of the youth as agents for criminal activities was on the increase in the metropolis.
He said the suspect, who claimed to be a General Arts student of Phillip Commercial School in Kumasi, was arrested after he, with his accomplice, one Nana Kofi Peprah, alias “Rasta”, now on the run, robbed a taxi driver at Edwenase, near Kwadaso in Kumasi.
Police Lance Corporal Godwin Ahianyo, briefing GNA on the robbery, said the suspect and accomplice hired the taxi from Santasi roundabout to Kwadaso Agric, and on reaching a spot, they stopped the driver.
He said while the suspect pretended he was collecting an item from a friend in the area, his accomplice drew a knife and inflicted deep wounds on the driver and took away some money and a mobile phone and run away.
Lance Corporal Ahianyo said while the accomplice was running away, the driver shouted for help, the suspect ran to the premises of Agric College where he was arrested by the security man on duty and handed over to Sofoline Line Police.
