Mr Alhassan Samari, Upper East Regional Minister, has cautioned that if the land dispute in Bawku is not quickly resolved another conflict could erupt at the onset of the farming season.
He said it is for this reason that a committee has been set up by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) headed by the Regional Police Commander Ofosu-Mesnah Gyeabour to deal with the issue.
Mr Samari made this observation when he briefed members of the National Peace Council (NPC) here on the Bawku conflict.
He described the present situation as "an uneasy calm" since the Mamprusis and Kusasis, the feuding factions, treat each other with suspicion and will not venture into each other’s territory.
He said the Bawku conflict has affected commercial activity, school attendance and health services and no one is interested to invest in the area.
The conflict which started in the 1950s over a chieftaincy dispute has now assumed a political dimension, he noted.
His Eminence Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson who is the chairman of the NPC said the President has tasked the members with the responsibilities to assist others already on the ground to find a lasting solution to the conflict.
The NPC is holding separate meetings with the Kusasis and Mamprusis to listen to their grievances.
