The ongoing restructuring, and transferring of personnel, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, is currently awakening ill emotions, and sparking discomfort among some staff.
Sources close to the hospital, comprising a section of the health workers, have it that the recent removal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Daniel N. Tapang, Head of Administration, Mr. George Atampugri, and others, was enough to ensure sanity in the management of the hospital.
The former Administrator and his cohorts were fired, after their alleged involvement in some financial malfeasances, which was detected at the hospital, somewhere last year.
The former Administrator is alleged to have succeeded in transferring some dedicated nurses, who were against his activities.
Mr. Atampugri, who was compelled to proceed on leave, for his alleged involvement in extortion, was consequently transferred to the Bolgatanga Hospital.
His position was taken over by one Mr. K wadwo Kusi Boachie, from Cape Coast, in the Central Region.
The CEO, Dr. Daniel Tapang, was equally transferred and replaced by Dr. Ken Segoe from Accra. The health workers, who confided in a section of the media in Tamale, and pleaded anonymity, lauded the transfers, describing it as commendable.
They, however, believe that certain key personalities should have been spared, to assist the new officials discharge their duties efficiently.
Information has it that the only female officer, Hajia Ayishetu Seidu, serving as Financial Director/Accountant, has also been listed for transfer, and is expected to be replaced by one Samuel Aboni, from the Greater Accra Region.
Some staff of the hospital have thus appealed to the Ministry of Health, to rescind its decision, and maintain her for sometime, since according to them, she is the only person who happens to be the old hand at the job.
According to them, she is one of the very few officials, who has always stood by them in times of crisis.
"The transfer exercise is very good, because it sends signals to our officers, that they are accountable to some powers somewhere, but we are not happy about the transfer of Hajia Ayishetu. The woman is good and approachable," the workers remarked.
They accused some key personalities at the hospital, whose demeanours had been severally criticized by the female Director of Finance.
The staff expressed belief that some of these individuals are those pushing for her to be transferred.
According to them, these persons had made several allegations against her, but she (Hajia Ayishetu) had been exonerated from all, which they insisted, was sufficient to keep her at her position.
The murmurings of the said workers, and other members within the Tamale Metropolis, have attracted the attention of the Concerned Citizens Association of Tamale (CCAT), which has also expressed worry over the inclusion of the only native, and female in the management board, of the Hospital.
Though the CCAT, to a large extent appreciated, the shake-up at the hospital, it however described it as a calculated attempt by the authorities, to push all the natives off the management board.
In a statement issued, and signed by the President of the CCAT, Alhassan Basharu Daballi, and copied to the press in Tamale, the group asserted that the transfer of Madam Ayishetu Seidu, Director of Finance, was not only going to bring about unfair representation of women in higher positions, but would also discourage other younger girls, who saw her as their idol in the region.
The CCAT has thus threatened to reject any person, other than Madam Ayishetu, and therefore appealed to the government, and the Ministry of Health, to reverse her transfer, since most of the residents, including some traditional leaders were uncomfortable with it.
