The Agona Swedru Circuit Court presided over by C.A Wilson has granted bail to two officials of the Democratic Freedom Party in the sum of 20 million cedis with a surety each for possessing fake currency notes.
They are Paul Dadzie, the youth organiser of the party and Ferdinard Afanu, a driver.
The accused persons have pleaded not guilty and are to reappear before the court on February 23, this year.
The facts of the case as given by the Deputy Superintendent of Police Raymond Martey, last year the Agona Swedru police had information about the circulation of fake currency notes in the area so they went on air to alert the public about it.
On February 6, this year the DFP inaugurated the Gomoa Eshiem executive of the party.
At about 5 pm that day, Dadzie who was on board the party’s Nissan Pick-up with registration number GC 8794 X, driven by Afanu bought four gallons of diesel valued at 140,000 from a filling station attendant, Ibrahim Mohammed Alhassan at Agona Swedru and paid him in 10,000 cedis denomination.
After examining the notes, Mr Alhassan realised that six of them were fake since they bore the same serial numbers.
When he called the attention of Dadzie to the issue of fake currency, he did not pay heed but rather told the driver (Afanu) to speed off.
After a fruitless chase, Mr Alhassan reported the matter to the Swedru police who alerted the Gomoa Eshiem police.
The police traced the two suspects, managed to arrest them and arraigned them before court after investigating the issue.
In their defence, the accused persons through their counsel, Lawyer Turkson of Agona Swedru claimed that they did not know that the notes were fake.
