The flag bearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom has questioned the government’s claims of enough food reserves to deal with food insecurity in the country.
He said the current policy direction on food production in the country was inadequate.
Dr. Nduom was speaking at a press conference to present the CPP’s policy on food production in the country.
The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Ernest Akubuor Debrah last week gave the assurance that there was enough food reserves in the country to ensure that Ghanaians do not suffer the food shortage that has hit some countries.
He sought to alay fears that the current food crisis facing the world could hit Ghana.
But Dr. Nduom doubts the assurances given by Mr. Debrah.
He gave the assurance that the CPP will ensure that enough food is produced in the country to meet the food needs of the people.
“Governments around the globe are not just standing by to watch the markets do as they please in the interest of the private sector operators alone.
“They are intervening on behalf of their people”, he stressed.
The CPP flag bearer noted that should the practice of restricting the export of food items become widespread, Ghana will face serious consequences.
He said countries that produce items that were imported into Ghana consume a huge chunk of their own produce.
He cited the United States and India as countries that consume more than 80 per cent of what they produce.
