Former President Jerry John Rawlings says the National Democratic Congress would have won the 2008 Elections by a landslide had Prof. Mills chosen Mrs Betty Mould Iddrisu as running mate.
He is convinced Betty, a lawyer and current Head of Legal and Constitutional Affairs at the Commonwealth Secretariat, UK, would have impacted more positively on the fortunes of the NDC in the December Elections than Mills’ choice, MP John Mahama.
He told the BBC that he remains convinced though that John Mahama will give the New Patriotic Party a match of their lives. “…John is still going to be a hard guy for these people to beat and they know it.”
Ex-President Rawlings had said John Mahama may not be a ‘so-called charismatic’ person, but he has such a fair measure of integrity about him that the NPP cannot match up to, and which makes him a likeable and admirable person for many, plus, Ghanaians ‘have grown so tired’ of the ruling regime that they want them out.
“All we want is for the international community not to desert us as they did in 2004 and allowed them to steal the elections but to be here to monitor what is going to happen here.”
According to Rawlings, he has always supported Atta Mills and even though they have their differences, it is never the case that when one jumps on the boat the other must jump off it.
Throwing more light on why he thought Betty Mould Iddrisu would have been a more positive choice for the NDC, Rawlings said Betty has such a grip on the country now that her nomination would have eased the battle for the NDC, just as John Mahama was so popular in 2004 when he Rawlings backed him for running mate and would have made it impossible for the NPP to steal the elections.
