The Agona District Fire Commander, Mr Alfred A. Acheampong, has given hotels, banks, Gas and Petrol Filling stations and restaurants in the area a one-month ultimatum to secure fire certificates or have their businesses closed down.
He said the Fire Precaution Premises Regulation Law LI 1724 of 2003, enjoined these businesses and institutions to acquire fire certificates as part of safety measures.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Agona Swedru on Friday, Mr Acheampong said Churches, shops and stores were also obliged to secure fire certificate for their premises.
According to the District Fire Commander many heads of institutions collected forms for the certificate last year but did not return them.
The District Fire Commander said a combined team of security personnel would embark on an exercise to inspect premises and offices and those found without the certificate would be dealt with according to the law.
Mr Acheampong said apart from closure the operators would have their names published in the newspapers to serve as a deterrent to others and then arrested and prosecuted.
