Kotoko ride on as Ashgold fall out

Kumasi Asante Kotoko walloped Nigerian customers Wikki Tourists 4:1 at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday to advance to the next round of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign. ‘General’ Emmanuel Osei Kufuor set the tone in the 20th minute, with Eric Bekoe (53rd and 64th) and Francis Koufie (69th) completing the rout which saw Kotoko complete the two-leg tie 6:3 on aggregate as the visitors fetched a consolation in the dying minutes of the lopsided affair. The two sides had battled to a two-all game in the first leg in Bauchi, Nigeria, a fortnight earlier. From nearby Obuasi, it was all ‘aahs and oohs’ as Ashantigold were bundled out of the CAF Champions League by visiting J.S. Kabylie of Algeria after they failed to score. The North Africans had come to Obuasi riding on a 3:0 first leg result, however assurances from the ‘soccer miners’ of turning the tables and advancing to the next stage had sent many of their followers to the Len Clay Stadium drumming and dancing. And the ‘miners’ had everything going for them right from kick off, creating several opportunities, including a penalty but managed to squander all. Mubarak Wakasu, David Telfer, Alhaji Sani, Nathaniel Quaye and David Owusu-Ansah all had clear chances to score at least a goal for their side. Indeed the visitors had to play the entire second half with ten men following a red card shown striker Henani Nabil after he slapped an assistant referee just after the whistle went for the break, but Ashgold failed to capitalise on the advantage and when youngster, Mubarak Wakaso finally blew the penalty with 15 minutes to go, the fans started emptying in the stands.
