A 59-year-old widow, Beatrice Odonkor, caused a stir when she uncontrollably mourned the death of her goat and gave it a befitting burial at New Akrade near Akosombo.
Her children joined her in the ceremony and sang dirges to mark the death of the animal.
The Krobo woman, who is a landlady and is popularly known as Auntie B in Akrade, wept bitterly, leaving her eyes red and her body dangling.
Madam Odonkor lost her husband six months ago and is observing the period of widowhood.
Confused and amazed neighbours watched with curiosity as Auntie B and her children buried the goat.
When The Mirror got to the 'funeral ground', neither the widow nor the children were ready to talk.
Stunned members of the community who had stormed the house to witness the unusual occurrence were also not ready to talk.
A national service person, Patrick Ofosu-Danso, who is a tenant of Auntie B’s, confirmed the story and said the incident occurred in the house around 7:30am last Tuesday.
According to Danso, the widow’s unceasing tears attracted a number of people to the scene, while she and her children buried the goat at the back of the house.
He explained that his landlady was a very hardworking woman who reared domestic animals which she treated humanely.
He said the nanny goat met its untimely death at the point of delivery, thereby leaving its young ones motherless.
“Though this defies rational argument, my landlady, in her top-to-down black dress code, had shown sympathy as a woman and owner of the unfortunate goat,” he said.
