The National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Dade-Kotopong in Accra, Nii Amasah Namoale, was among six people arrested yesterday morning for various offences during the by-election at the Offinso South constituency in the Ashanti region.
The MP was arrested around 9 am for allegedly fomenting trouble at the Amoawi Methodist polling centre together with two ‘macho’ men, named as Alhassan Adam and Mohammed Alhassan.
According to reports, three took positions behind the returning officer at the centre, in defiance of directives by Electoral Commission (EC) officials to move from there.
The EC had arranged for seats about 10 metres from where the returning officer was seated for all political party officials but the three allegedly insisted on being behind him to ensure that only registered voters cast their votes.
This resulted in a brief exchange of words between them and the returning officer who called in the police to arrest them.
They were released later in the afternoon.
The three others who were arrested were allegedly minors attempting to vote at the Kayera poling centre.
Adam Karim, Ramatu Mumuni and Barikisu Shumaila, all claimed to be 18 years but election officials said they believed they were far below the voting age.
They were thus arrested by National Security Personnel and handed over to the district police.
