Passengers Protest Police Search On Vehicle

When passengers on board an Accra-bound bus were stopped by the police at Konongo, they thought their time was being wasted by the police and questioned why they should be stopped. For about 30-minutes, the passengers refused to alight for a search on the vehicle with some of them raining insults and others threatening as the two parties engaged in heated auguments. But when the Divisional Crime Officer, ASP Francis Baah, managed to calm them down for the search, the passengers were astonished when four big fertilizer sacks containing leaves suspected to be Indian hemp "wee" were removed from under the seats. The leaves were well compressed and packed in the bags. The passengers, at this point, had nothing to say but to turn their anger on the driver, Job Jonah Apam, who was arrested as the prime suspect. Briefing newsmen here, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Frank Adu-Poku, said the police intercepted the bus last Friday at about 6.30pm upon a tip-off. He said the police had the information that some suspected armed robbers were on board a 207 Benz-bus loaded with the stuff. He said when the bus was intercepted, it was discovered the people on board were passengers enroute to Accra and did not know of the presence of the substance. Mr. Adu-Poku pleaded with passengers to bear with the police anytime their vehicles are stopped by the police for a search. The suspect has been remanded by Juaso Circuit Court until February 28. In another development, the inhabitants of Asamang in the Afigya Sekyere district of Ashanti jubilated when Kofi Nti, 27, described by the police as "the terror of Asamang" was arrested last Tuesday. Nti said to be a drug addict, had allegedly been terrorising the inhabitants and threatening the town’s environmental health officer, Charles Asiedu, with death. The Regional Police Commander said, Mr. Asiedu asked Nti to relocate his piggery as it was in an unauthorised site. That angered Nti who threatened to kill Asiedu so he reported the matter to the police. It was when the police went to arrest him that they found a quantity of leaves believed to be ‘wee’ in his room. Nti fought the police for about 20 minutes in an attempt to escape but to no avail. A locally manufactured pistol loaded with bullets, sharp cutlasses and other dangerous implements and a wooden Ak47 assault rifle were found in the room. He had been charged with threat of death and possessing narcotic drugs without authority. He is currently in police custody pending prosecution. Times
