Government says the people who were arrested this morning at the Gomoa Buduburam Refugee Camp have not been registered as refugees in Ghana.
Deputy Information Minister, Frank Agyekum, speaking on Joy FM’s current affairs programme, News File, said the 35 arrested Liberians who are not refugees and are part of a group fomenting trouble in the Camp are to be repatriated to Liberia.
He said, these men have no legal basis to be in Ghana as refugees and therefore, have no business living in the country.
Speaking later to Joy News, Interior Minister, Kwamena Bartels confirmed the story and said, even the UNHCR does not recognise these people as refugees because they are not registered with the organisation as such.
These people he said have no documentation to prove that they are refugees.
This morning, news broke that the police have stormed the Camp and were arresting men. Liberian citizens in Ghana started making frantic phone calls to radio stations including myjoyonline making claims that police are indiscriminately arresting men on the Camp.
But according to government officials, the arrests involved people who are living in the country illegally as refugees.
