A circuit court in Kumasi has sentenced Joseph Bukari, a 30-year-old shop assistant to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing 30 million cedis belonging to his employer Kofi Nyantakyi.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and asked for leniency.
Assistant superintendent of Police (ASP) Kuffour Boateng told the court presided over by Ernest Yao Obimpeh that on December 5, last year, Bukari was given the 30 million cedis to be deposited at the HFC Bank in Kumasi but failed to do so and went into hiding.
ASP Boateng said following a tip-off, Bukari was arrested at a hotel in Accra.
The prosecutor said the accused admitted the offence and indicated (accused) that after spending 10.5 million cedis of the amount, a group of six men at gunpoint collected the remaining money from him at the hotel.
