A 51-year-old news vendor in Tema hit his fellow street squatter with an object rendering him blind in the left eye during a quarrel over sleeping space, a Tema Circuit Court has heard.
Medical reports confirmed that Osumanu Appiah, the victim, a 50-year-old labourer at Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, is completely blind in the left eye as a result of the assault by Samuel Annor, the prosecutor Chief Inspector Edith Nutakor, told the court, presided over by Justice Nicholas Abodakpi.
She said on January 6, at about 2 am, Osumanu returned from a night out to sleep in front of the Kingsway Store where he normally passed the night.
As it was dark, Osumanu in the process of lying down, stepped on Annor who was asleep nearby. Annor got offended and held Osumanu by his shirt and pushed him against a wall.
While Osumanu was struggling to free himself from Annor’s grips, the latter hit his left eye with an object, resulting in Osumanu being rushed to the hospital where he was admitted for three days and later operated upon.
Annor was arrested and charged with causing harm as a result of the medical report.
The court remanded him in prison custody until February 27 when hearing of the case continues.
