For the first time in the past two months Bawku is experiencing calm and the market once again is becoming vibrant, with people and commercial vehicles moving freely, Captain Victor Abbey, Officer Commanding, Air Borne Force, in charge of Bawku Detachment said.
He explained that the people were beginning to cooperate with the Security Personnel and that was helping a lot to calm tempers and to bring peace to the area.
Captain Abbey, who was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bawku, noted that he believed the peace talks held in Bolgatanga and subsequent radio broadcasts on the need for peace was helping, saying: "The Security Personnel are playing their part to the best of their ability, but it is also crucial that the people contribute by cooperating and encouraging peace among themselves."
He expressed the hope that the peaceful atmosphere would not be disturbed and said the Security Personnel were patrolling all the vantage areas to ensure that the bad nuts did not start anything untoward.
Mr David Nar-ire, Deputy Coordinating Director of the Bawku Municipal Assembly, said the Assembly educated its members to spread awareness on the damage the violence was causing and the cost of trying to bring peace to the area.
This he said had also helped as people were beginning to appreciate the real effect of the violence on the entire Municipality and how much they were losing in terms of development projects.
He observed that if the present peace situation continued for the rest of the week, the various departments including Health Personnel could resume work.
