Several acres of oranges are going waste in parts of the Birim North District of the Eastern region. The farmers most of which are in a town called Afosu say they cannot find buyers for the fruits which are getting rotten by the day.
Their oranges are usually harvested and sold between November and January, but they say they were only able to make a few sales in November and early December.
The President of the Dadieso Aba Citrus farmers Association Isaiah Katakyi tells Joy business report that he and his colleague farmers are frustrated and worried particularly about monies they borrowed for their farms
Mr. Katakyi also says efforts to get help from the local authorities have so far proved futile
Citrus farming is the major livelihood activity besides cocoa in the Afosu area but there has always been the challenge of finding buyers.
According to the farmers an orange processing company which bought their produce last year says it is unable to do so this year because of problems of transportation.
