President Kufuor has observed that the expected revenue from recently discovered oil and gas in the country will be a national asset which should be used for the good of the people.
He was speaking at the Oil and Gas Conference in Accra called to discuss issues concerning the oil discovery.
Oil has tended to create instability and worsened poverty in many African warranting the conference to discuss ways of averting the unfortunate experiences of those countries.
The President said the bringing together of civil society, oil experts and other technocrats in the oil industry was in recognition of the need to have a problem free oil exploitation.
He said the retooling of the Ghana National Petroleum Company had yielded positive results culminating in the discoveries.
The president commended the GNPC for working assiduously towards the discovery of oil.
The Norwegian Minister for International Development, Eric Soner described the conference as a novelty.
He said many countries which discovered oil basked in the euphoria, forgetting to think about problems that may emanate from the discovery and plan to meet such challenges.
According to him, it was a global historic event for Ghana to sit down and think and plan how to manage its oil resources, saying it would help avert the problems that had plagued some countries as result of oil find.
It is expected Ghana would draw a lot from the experiences of Norway which is one of the success stories in terms of proper management of oil resources.
Ghana on two separate occasions discovered oil in commercial quantities last year.
Another find was announced at the weekend.
Experts say there is still a huge prospect of more oil being found on the shores of the country.
