Police arrest killer suspect

A settler herbalist who allegedly shot and killed two fishermen, stabbed a policeman in the chest and escaped to his village near Sogakope has been nabbed. The policeman was stabbed while he and his colleagues attempted to arrest the suspect at Defoe, near Kojokrom in Brong-Ahafo. Hlorti Kukame, 40, again struggled with a team of 12 policemen from Sogakope when they swooped in on him at his hideout on Thursday, injuring one of them before he was overpowered. His victims were named as John Alex Teye, 25 and Pastor Oscar Jordan, 40, both natives of Ningo in the Dangme-West District. Mr Godact Hlodzi, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in-charge of South-Tongu District, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that a misunderstanding arose between Ningo and other settler fishermen over fishing rights in a river near Defoe in Brong-Ahafo last year. He said on December 25 last year, policemen were dispatched to the village to arrest the kingpins in the confusion. Mr. Hlodzi said while there, Kukame and a brother allegedly attacked the police in the process of which one Constable Twum Asumi was stabbed in the chest. He said the following day, after the police retreated, Kukame, allegedly attacked the Ningo community there and shot Teye and Jordan dead. Mr Hlodzi said upon a briefing by the Atebubu police and investigations, a team from Sogakope was sent to Akorbogbeto, Kukame's village and arrested him after a hectic struggle during which he injured one Sergeant I. R. Okyere. Okyere sustained an injury on the eyebrow. Mr Hlordzi said the Sogakope and Atebubu police were continuing with their investigations. He said the deceased had since been handed over to their families for burial after autopsy. Source GNA
