President J.A. Kufuor has congratulated the senior national football team, the Black Stars, on the sterling performance that saw Ghana qualify for the semi-finals of the MTN Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 12 years.
In a message to the Black Stars, President Kufuor lauded the determination that characterised the play of the team, even with the numerical disadvantage.
The statement which was signed by the Press Secretary of the President and Presidential Spokesperson, Andrew Awuni, said the national team "maintained their composure, dominating the game and exhibiting superior tactical play that ensured that victory was beyond doubt, though it was a hard-won one".
The President says the continuous victory of the Black Stars has invigorated the spirit of the nation, particularly the unparalleled display of patriotism, the great show of sportsmanship and the "can do it attitude" which is necessary for the continued success of the country.
"As you rededicate yourself to the mission 'Host and Win', prepare yourselves for the battles ahead and be assured of the total support of the government and the country", the President added.
Meanwhile, President Kufuor who cut short his international assignment last week to spend some time with the Black Stars, left for Italy yesterday afternoon to address the annual general meeting of the World Food Programme.
The Title Sponsors of the 26th Africa Cup of Nations, MTN, have also hailed the Black Stars for their impressive victory over the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
"Your victory in this match, though difficult, adds to your succession of victories and unblemished record in the tournament and it is a sign of your determination to win the ultimate prize, the Africa Cup", Mr Brett Goschen, Chief Executive Officer of MTN, said in a message to the Black Stars.
