The Ghana Mines Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress has threatened a sit down strike at the Ahafo mines of Newmont Ghana.
The workers are demanding the unconditional reinstatement of the company’s local union chairman, Kewku Shaibu, who they say was wrongfully dismissed for questioning a management decision to withdraw a coffee rest period, last Friday.
The coffee rest period is enjoyed during night shift and meant to prevent the workers from sleeping.
The General Secretary of the Mines Workers Union, Prince William Ankrah told Joy
News that Shaibu does not deserve such a ruthless and unfair treatment, arguing he was
expressing a genuine concern.
Mr Ankrah also accused Newmont of failing to present a Committee of Inquiry’s report on comments by an expatriate worker who passed derogatory comments about opinions of Ghanaian workers in the department.
