ECG to refund money to consumers

Consumers who fall within the lifeline categories of electricity consumption can heave a sigh of relief as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) promises to reimburse them latest by March this year. Following tariff increases last year, many consumers were over charged, raising numerous concerns. The lifeline policy is meant to cushion the poor who may find it difficult to pay their bills. Beneficiaries of the lifeline categories, therefore enjoy a certain minimum level of subsidy provided they do not consume beyond a certain threshold. The threshold used to be between 0-50 kilowatts, but was increased to 150 kilowatts by the government following the tariff increases late last year. Officials of ECG, say the consumers were overcharged because they had not been informed of government’s decision to increase the threshold. Prepaid users, according to the officials, will be credited with the overcharged amounts, while other consumers will have the government subsidy appear on their monthly bills.
