A group championing women advocacy has brought smiles on the faces of some five mothers by settling their medical bills at the Mother and Baby Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The mothers could not go home after being delivered of their babies because they could not afford bills.
The move by the group, dubbed Winnie’s Women World Initiative (W3initiative), was to give these stranded mothers the opportunity to celebrate February, the month of love with their loved ones.
Some of them have spent months at the maternity ward of the hospital while others spent weeks.
Founder of the W3initiative, Winnifred Selby together with her team visited the maternity ward on Sunday, February 9, to settle the bills so the mothers could finally take their babies home.
The gesture was part of Winnifred’s yearly charity activity to give back to the society which has contributed immensely to her career which is mostly done on her birthday.
Speaking at the short ceremony, the award-winning multi-talented social entrepreneur revealed that she was touched to come to the aid of the women after hearing their story as she experienced the same fate some 25 years ago.
“My motivation is from the day I was born - 9th February 1995 when they gave birth to me at the same hospital Mother and Baby Unit some 25 years ago. My mother couldn’t afford to pay her bills it was someone who paid for her so the best way to give back to the World after 25yrs is to also pay bills for newborn babies at the same hospital. I believe there could be a Winnifred or someone great among the babies,” she said.
In addition to the bills, she also donated some babies’ items worth thousands of Ghana cedis for the upkeep of their babies.
The young entrepreneur used the occasion to encouraged young women to plan and make sure they are prepared before bringing babies into the world.
