Aviation Minister Joseph Kofi Adda has disclosed that portions of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) are being used by the United States of America military.
The North American country is using Terminal 1 for logistical support and hangaring services, the ex-MP told Parliament Wednesday when he was responding to questions.
He said the arrangement is part of the defense cooperation agreement signed with the superpower and approved by Parliament in 2018.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), he explained, has rented the space to McDan Aviation which is providing the services for the US military.
“It is a fixed-base operation agreement,” the legislator told the House.
He added that McDan, per an agreement with the Ghana Airports Company, can offer the same services to private jet operators as well.
All transactions are expected to be subjected to customs checks, he assured.
What is the agreement about?
Ghana and the US entered into the defense agreement two years ago in a move that heavily divided Parliament and the country.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) accused government of ceding the country’s sovereignty to the superpower.
However, details revealed by government showed previous governments, including John Mahama, John Kufuor and Jerry Rawlings all signed similar agreements.
Among other things, the agreement permits the US Military to use Ghana as a base for staging and deploying forces.
Despite the unrestricted access and tax exemptions, Ghana also agreed to bear the cost and take primary responsibility for securing the US facilities in Ghana.
Ghanaian soldiers are expected to get some counterterrorism training as part of the agreement while the state also benefits some $20 million.
