Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George has expressed worry over the continuous discharge of liquid waste by real estate company, Devtraco Limited into open spaces. 

Visiting residents around the estate in his constituency on Thursday, the MP indicated that the unlawful practice of the real estate company is gradually taking a toll on the people and businesses in the neighbourhood.

“Devtraco should do the right thing, they don’t pay property rate to the assembly, they are building without permit from the assembly, they build on-road reservations, they have basically become a law onto themselves,” Mr George stated.

According to the legislator, management of Devtraco has refused to heed to calls of the District Engineer to put an end to its actions despite numerous warnings.

it has rather, residents say, but threatened individuals and business owners who complain about the menace.

“You can’t tell me that you are one of Ghana’s biggest real estate developers so you generate waste in your estate and pump it out and nobody should talk. If we talk you are going to threaten us.

“Businesses have come to me to complain but you have gone to them and threaten to shut down their businesses. I mean what kind of irresponsibility is that?” he queried.

Mr George therefore, petitioned the Water and Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to hurriedly check the unsanitary condition in the area before it’s too late. 

“I want to use this platform to appeal to Minster for Sanitation, that she should immediately instruct her officers to come and look at this and see the mess that is being created by Devtraco.”

He also promised his outfit will continue to see to the matter and ensure that Devtraco adopts the appropriate practice of disposing of waste.  

“As a Member of Parliament I still have 10 months to go, I don’t care what happens in the next election but on this matter over the next 10 months, I would ensure that the laws of our land deal with anybody [who is flouting same]

According to Director of Infrastructure, Kwesi Twum Bonful the company has informed the Assembly and has started constructing a drainage system to hold water from the estate.

This, he said, should be completed within two weeks. He is, however, unhappy that the company is being solely blamed for the liquid waste in the community.

He claims that in the absence of a proper drainage system in the entire community, all residents have had to dispose of their liquid waste openly, adding that it was unfortunate that Devtraco is being blamed for it.
