The management of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ghana Ltd says the decision to part ways with the former Country Manager of the company is not related to any planned changes to the business.
According to the company, the two are separate issues and the conflation of the two matters has been an unfortunate and incorrect interpretation of the events.
A statement from the company said, “In our continual quest to create shared value and provide our customers and consumers with best-in-class services in these conditions, the company has been focusing on new ways of working to become more efficient, agile and sustainable in the short and long-term; so that we can respond to the evolving needs of our consumers.”
The statement added, “The ECCBC will, therefore, continue to review its business operations across the region and would react accordingly, where the need arises, in order to protect the interests of its stakeholders, including its employees.”
According to Coca Cola “It has been agreed that The Company and its former Country Manager will part ways and we are currently negotiating the terms of separation, in complete compliance with the law. We trust that these negotiations will be concluded amicably.”
“This decision was taken by the Management of our parent company, Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company (ECCBC). Whoever is chosen by the Management of ECCBC to take up responsibility for the business will have their unequivocal support.”
Demonstrations
Workers of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ghana have been protesting against the removal of the company's former Managing Director, Seth Adu-Baah.
The workers, who have been protesting since Monday, January 20, 2020, in their red arm and headbands, have accused the company of unfair treatment against Ghanaian managers.
On Tuesday, the Human Resource Manager of the company was prevented from entering the premises of the company.
The Assistant Secretary of the local union, George Gyimah-Sarpong alleged the HR Manager is the brain behind the removal of Seth Adu-Baah. He said Mr Baah has been a major mouthpiece of the workers over the years and therefore his removal will cause a big disservice to the workers.
‘We are protesting strongly against our HR per our detailed investigation it is very obvious she is also one of the people who are scheming strongly against the removal of our MD. We are still reinforcing that we need our MD back. He is the only Ghanaian among the executives of Coca Cola international and we cannot lose him,” Mr Gyimah-Sarpong said.
Seth Adu-Baah, who has worked with the company for 18 years, has served as MD of Coca Cola in Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Ghana before he was allegedly forced out of the company.
Earlier, the Communications Manager said the three days demonstration has not affected the distribution of goods to its customers.
“It is unfortunate but I assure our numerous customers that regardless of what happens we are still able to deliver their beverages to them,” he said.
“In the last few years, the reality of the markets we operate in has evolved and become more complex and our industry has witnessed increased changes in customer trends and competition. In our continual quest to create shared value and provide our customers and consumers with best-in-class services in these conditions, the company has been focusing on new ways of working to become more efficient, agile and sustainable in the short and long-term; so that we can respond to the evolving needs of our consumers.”
According to the company, “The ECCBC will, therefore, continue to review its business operations across the region and would react accordingly, where the need arises, in order to protect the interests of its stakeholders, including its employees. We assure all our stakeholders that our first priority during any such changes to the business is the wellbeing of our employees, and we are committed to following the requirements of the Law and giving our Ghanaian employees opportunities in the process, where they exist.”
“We have been and will continue to engage all relevant stakeholders to ensure we resolve any differences that may exist. The Company would like to assure our customers and consumers that, the current situation will not affect our ability to deliver their favourite beverages,” the statement added.
