The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) has urged Ghanaians to be tolerant ahead of the 2020 general elections.
The Commission said this is the only way Ghana can reinforce its stand as the most peaceful country in Africa.
The Tema Metropolitan Director of the Commission, Isaac Kwame Antwi, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, wants Ghanaians to tolerate one another before, during and after the 2020 general elections in order to ensure peace during the election.
He urged Ghanaians to engage in activities that will ensure peace as it is the duty of every Ghanaian to promote peace in the country.
“We will educate the people in the Tema metropolis on tolerance and peaceful coexistence and the need to allow state security agencies to work. This is very necessary," he said.
Mr. Antwi also indicated that the Commission is working efficiently to promote peace in the country.
He revealed plans of the commission to form an inter-party advisory committee with membership from the political parties, civil society, the Assembly, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), media and the police."
The committee, he stated will be a platform responsible for address pressing issues between political parties in the area and to promote peace before, during and after the elections.
He mentioned that this is one of the ways the commission intends to reinforce the already existing peace in the country.
The Tema Metropolitan Director of the NCCE made mention of an inter-party dialogue committee which would serve as a platform for dialogue with parliamentary candidates in the metropolis.
He further said the NCCE would collaborate with security agencies in the metropolis to sensitise people to freely report crimes, especially those related to elections.
Workshops, according to him, will be organised for the Assembly and Unit Committee members to sensitise them to the importance and work of the local government system as well as their responsibilities to the people.
