An educational movement known as the Teachers' & Training Advocacy (TTA) has criticised former President John Dramani Mahama’s promise to scrap National Service for graduate teachers saying the act "will impair the future of teachers" in the country.
Flagbearer for the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, last week at the launch of his fundraising campaign, promised to cancel National Service for trainee teachers should he come back to power.
However, the TTA fears such political promises could limit the progress of education in the country.
National Convener, Antwi Karikari Patrick, who read a statement on behalf of the group argued that "the fate of teachers is better with the implementation of the mandatory national service."
He further explained on behalf of the TTA that the National Service Scheme is essential to the making of teachers in the country.
He added that the teacher trainees are “tired of the chunk of promises that are perpetuated by political parties especially in times they want to clench onto power.”
They accused former President Mahama of double standards as he underwent National Service successfully, a factor which they believe has been vital to his rise in the political ranks.
