Driver convicted for ignoring police order to stop

The Assin Foso district magistrate’s court on Wednesday fined Kofi Afful, a driver from Assin Foso, GH¢80.00 for failing to stop at a police check. Afful, who pleaded guilty, would go to prison for three months if he fails to pay the fine. Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police George Hlordzi told the court, presided over by Mr Joseph Blay, that in March 2007, Afful, who was driving a Mercedes Benz mini bus from Kumasi to Cape Coast on reaching a section of the road at Assin Juaso on the Foso-Cape Coast highway, ignored a police signal to stop and drove off. Meanwhile another driver on Wednesday was fined GH¢480.00 for killing a pedestrian with his vehicle. Alfred Boamah, a commercial driver from Assin Foso who pleaded guilty to careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm, would go to prison for nine months in default. The court also ordered Boamah to assist the relatives of the deceased to process documents to enable them claim insurance cover. The court heard that in July 2003, Boamah reversed his Nissan Atlas bus carelessly and in the process knocked down and injured one Abena Kessewa, 65, who died on arrival at the Fosu district hospital.
