The Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and National Insurance Commission has launched a two-day seminar for accident investigators in Koforidua.
The seminar sought to equip the participants about road traffic crash investigations and enforcement of traffic rules and regulations.
Addressing the participants, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Nuertey Ayertey, expressed worry about the increase in accident cases recorded for the past years.
He said a recent report on accident by the National Road Safety Commission indicated that over 228 lives were lost and 188 people knocked down whiles 1,288 people sustained injuries.
The report is seen as critical with urgent solutions needed to bring down the accidents. Mr Ayertey said ensuring safety on the roads was a collective responsibility and urged all to join hands to help reduce road accidents.
The Deputy Eastern Regional Deputy Commander of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Afful Boakye Yiadom urged the participants to take advantage of programmes organised by the service to equip themselves with new technics in their areas of specialisation.
The Director-General of MTTD, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno said his office endorsed the training because the Police administration received a lot of complaints from the public questioning the competencies of some of their accident investigators.
He called on road users to obey rules and regulations on the road and also avoid careless driving as the festive season drew closer. The participants were selected from six regions for the training aimed at enforcing road safety management.
