The chairman of the organizing committee for the annual flagship PGA golf championship, Hans De Beer has revealed that very soon the headline sponsor, Gold Fields Damang will roll out a strategic capacity building scheme for Ghanaian golfers.
He said the scheme will among other things send three of the nation's finest abroad to hone their skills.
Mr Hans De Beer said this at the opening ceremony of the sixth edition of this year's professional golfers association championship taking place in Damang, Tarkwa.
According to him the standard of the championship has gone up a notch, and the company's intention is to have the country's golfers compete with the industry's creme de la creme not only on the continent but to also cross swords with the finest from America, UK and some most glamorous and prestigious golf courses dotted around the world.
He said that though the organizers are held in charm by the exploits of Vincent Torgah, Emos Korblah and Kojo Banni they still reckon that at least getting two of our golfers to compete at the Augusta in the United States of America, the British Open and the PGA Tour, where the creme de la creme assemble in Europe will be a dream come true.
To this end, Goldfields is keeping close eye on golfers to sign-up on this capacity program. Speaking to the press, Mr Hans De Beer explained the motive behind the company's intention, mentioning that getting Ghanaian golfers to South Africa will help them not to only hone their tricks of the trade but will provide them suitable offers to be exposed. He said one of the shortcomings of the Ghanaian golfer is the lack of playing time on the golf course compared to their counterparts in South Africa, Gabon, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Cameroon, and he believes this program will curtail this shortfall.
He emphasized that for any golfer to rise to the apex of success and keep up with the pace and always show a rich vein of form at the top level, he must be put on such a capacity program that insists on regularly and consistently strutting his stuff on the green course.
He again said that the focus of Goldfields Damang is to get golfers from Ghana to compete at the highest level. He added that Goldfields Ghana will go to all length to ensure that this capacity development program and actualization see the light of day in no time.
