Residents of Afiadenyigba in Keta Municipality in the Volta Region, have expressed worry over what they say is increasing suicide cases in the area.
At least, three out of five people who attempted suicide lost their lives between October and November 2019, JoyNews Correspondent, Ivy Sertorjie reported.
Residents fear the number could go up as little is done to investigate and find solutions to the menace which they also suspect may have a spiritual cause.
A man who identifies himself as ‘Kalusha’ lost his nephew who was a teacher to suicide at the end of October. He is among those who believe suicide has a spiritual link.
President of the Anlo Afiadenyigba Youth Council, Bubu Klinogo is worried over the trend and prays something is done about it.
The Head of Department of Psychological Medicine & Mental Health at the School of Medicine at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Dr. Eugene Dordoye is worried over residents' attribution of suicide to witchcraft.
Speaking at a public forum organised by the Anlo Afiadenyigba Youth Council, Dr. Dordoye advised the residents to seek professional intervention on suicide issues instead of reading spiritual meanings into them.
"Of course there are spirits and I will not dispute that but I would like to plead with the community members to always seek help and help people in similar situations rather than concentrating on the spiritual aspect which is very worrying," he said.
Chief Executive of Favor Foundation For Life, Favor Brown, who said he once attempted suicide, hopes through regular counselling and community forums, many lives would be saved.
"My dream is to see Ghana and the world a suicide-free nation," he declared.
