A 26-year-old woman has been arrested by the Western Regional Police Command for trafficking five teenage girls from Nigeria to Ghana.
The five victims, Ngozi Thompson, 17; Ruth Obi, 19; Angel Godspower, 20; Jenifer Demi, 17, and Emmanuella Okorie, 19 were rescued on Sunday by the Takoradi Metropolitan Police.
According to the police, the suspect, Mary Gladys Obi, deceived her victims by assuring them job placement in Ghana.
The suspect promised her victims that they will get to learn a trade once they arrive in Ghana but forced them into prostitution instead when they arrived in the country.
The victims said that upon arrival at Takoradi some months ago, the suspect took them to her brothel where they were held and forced into sex work.
They added that after having being forced to sleep with men Gladys Obi would claim all the money they earned.
According to the Western Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Redeemer Vincent Dedjoe said that the victims are being cared for by the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Service.
