Eric Bekoe scored the only goal of the match to pip his former club and ensure that the Ashanti Warriors remain on top with 22 points and a 17-goal advantage.
Kpando Heart of Lions kept the heat on Kotoko with an emphatic 2-0 win over Accra Hearts of Oak; their first over the defending champions in their six years of participation in the premiership. Owusu Banahene's goals gave victory to the Volta Regional Representatives and kept them on 22 points, same as Asante Kotoko, but with an inferior goal difference.
Real Tamale United, fresh from their mid week 6-2 destruction of Liberty Professionals, climbed to the third spot when they opened the New Tamale Stadium with a 2-0 win over Kessben.Their match was to test run the facility in the Northern Regional capital, which is billed to host Group D matches during the 26th African Cup of Nations this month.
At the other end of the table, Accra Great Olympics remain glued to the bottom but their fans rejoiced for the first time in the season when the Ghanaian Blues won their first match with a 2-0 spanking of “Gamba All Blacks” at the El Wak Stadium here. Olympics, who have fired two coaches already in the new season, are just a point adrift of Sekondi Hasaacas, who lost to All Stars by a lone strike in Wa and Tema Youth who played well enough to record a draw at the dreaded Golden City Park in Berekum, home of Arsenal.
Another spectacular victory of the weekend was the 2-1 win by Tema Real Sportive over African Champions League campaigners, Ashanti gold. The feat pushed Sportive out of the relegation zone and into the middle ranks. As the League goes on break (to pave way for CAN 2008) after the 10th-week fixtures on Sunday, the battle for the title and relegation will be fierce on the final day before the break.
Questions such as Asante Kotoko's continuous leadership and Great Olympics' floor position on the standings will then be answered. Following is the league table after the ninth week.
