The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye has said gay people are humans with deviant conduct who should either be treated medically or subjected to spiritual deliverance.
Delivering his remarks at the Speaker’s Prayer Breakfast Wednesday morning, he said there is no chapter or verse in the Bible or the Quran that supports homosexuality.
He added that Ghana must take a stand against homosexuality, remarking the western world has a problem with the phenomenon, caused by an increasing sway towards individualism.
The Speaker also defended the President’s slow reaction to the United Nation’s call for LGBTQ rights, saying the President was gathering the views of his fellow Ghanaians before speaking.
Prof. Oquaye who has ‘known Akufo-Addo since 1964’ added that the President’s pedigree of descending from religious leaders will not permit him to support rights for LGBTQ rights.
The president’s grandfather was a Presbyter and his mother was a lay preacher and therefore holds a conservative worldview.
The issue of sexuality has become a hot topic in the country recently.
Moses Foh-Amoaning, the Executive Secretary and Spokesperson for the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values tasked government to clearly state its position on the subject in the heat of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education debate.
The law lecturer and a critic of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) movement also said there was the need for the state to have a national policy on the subject matter to avoid further misinterpretation by the public. This, he said should be done on a wide spectrum from, legal point of view to scientific, health points of view as well as the international relations to ensure common understanding. The National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values is a tripartite coalition made up of Christian community; the Christian council, Catholic secretariat, Catholic Bishops conference, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the Muslim community and the Traditional rulers.Latest Stories
