Unilever Ghana Limited has marked this year’s Global Hand Washing Day reaching about three and a half million Ghanaians so far.
According to the Managing Director of Unilever Ghana, Gladys Amoah, the company, through its hygiene behavioral change programme, has reached a billion people globally.
“We also focus on communities through mothers in women’s groups in churches and other organizations with the hope that good hygiene habits will be adopted by as many people as possible.” She said while speaking on the theme “Clean hands for all.”
This year’s theme focused on handwashing as a basic necessity for a healthy and hygienic lifestyle.
Unilever, through its Lifebuoy brand held this year’s event at Christ the King International School opposite the Flagstaff house, Accra. The school children, teachers and their families who took part in the event, made a pledge to wash their hands with soap under running water every day.
The event was graced by some Ministers and their representatives including the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Deputy Minister of Health.
In a speech read on behalf of the Gender Minister, parents were entreated to continue reminding children about the importance of regular hand washing with soap under running water.
The Lifebuoy brand of Unilever co-founded the Global Hand-washing Day in 2008 together with international aid such as the UNICEF, USAID, the World Bank Water and Sanitation Programme, US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Academy for Educational Development.
