Psychologist and lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Collins Badu Agyeman, has called for proper orientation on sexual harassment for lecturers.
According to him, legal orientation should be given to make lecturers aware of the implications of sexual harassment.
He said just like the university ensures a rigorous process is observed before hiring a lecturer, the same rigorous should be adopted to remove a lecturer who violates the university’s rules on sexual harassment.
Speaking at a sexual harassment seminar held at the University of Ghana, Legon, he noted that sexual harassment has become pervasive in society because of a lack of strong anti-sexual harassment policies to check the act.
He also called for an intensified focus as people in other institutions also suffer the menace.
“Let us not just imagine university campuses… it happens in churches, politics, interns and national service persons also suffer the ordeal”, he stated.
The issue of sexual harassment took centre stage in Ghana after BBC released a “Sex for Grades” documentary.
The documentary exposed some lecturers allegedly demanding sexual favours in exchange for better grades.
The psychologist, however, said the discussion should not be limited because it is a deep-seated problem that needs to be looked at.
He said sexual harassment was gradually becoming a global menace.
