As the World celebrates Global Handwashing Day on October 15, PZ Cussons, as part of its corporate social responsibility, has renewed its commitment to the annual activity of teaching children about healthy hygiene habit.
This year, the company in partnership with the Ghana Medical Association, celebrated the day by demonstrating proper handwashing techniques to pupils at Datus Primary, JHS and SHS in Tema after a day of fun-packed activities.
Speaking to JoyBusiness on the sidelines of the event, Category Manager, Personal Care at PZ Cussons, Marian Boateng, said “We have various initiatives for profits but this is not one of them. This is more of corporate social responsibility so we set this day aside every year and then we do it wholeheartedly.”
PZ Cussons has championed hand hygiene with various activities led by its Carex brand. This is the eighth year the company has embarked on this charitable course.
Dr Sarah Davis, a member of the Ghana Medical Association, demonstrated to the children the most effective way of handwashing with soap and explained the benefits associated with it.
Dr Davis said hand hygiene contributes to a country’s economic growth and development through increased productivity.
“If you wash your hands you become healthy you do not fall sick your productivity will increase, you’ll earn more money because we need money in the economy.”
She has however urged other corporate organizations to add hand hygiene and health as part of their CSRs.
“I’ve not seen a bank with a stand for handwashing there but you go inside you touch money; money that has been to so many places so if we can have handwashing stands in front of so many institutions it will be better,” she said.
This year’s Global Handwashing Day is themed, "Clean Hands for all."
