The Head of Mental Health Department of the University of Ghana Nursing and Midwifery School, Dr Samuel Adjorlolo has appealed to government to put measures in place to ensure better Mental Health delivery in the country.
Dr Adjorlolo said Ghana’s quest to achieve universal health coverage will be attainable if government holistically revamp the deteriorating state of mental health in the country. He called for the passage of Legislative Instrument to back the Mental Health Act.
Dr Adjorlolo said this at the launch of Care and Action for Mental Health in Africa Games 2019 in Accra.
The Care and Action for Mental Health in Africa (CAHMA) is a non-governmental organisation aimed at improving mental patient recovery on the continent.
It seeks to achieve this through sporting activities to ensure social inclusion of the mentally challenged and socially rejected.
The Head of the Mental Health Department of the University of Ghana School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr Samuel Adjorlolo urged government to prioritise mental health to achieve universal health coverage to attain the Sustainable Development Goal Three.
He called for the passage of the Legislative Instrument for effective implementation of the Mental Health Act.
The Executive Director of Care and Action for Mental Health in Africa, Ebenezer Fianko spoke about how sport will help re-integration of mentally challenged persons into society.
The 2019 CAHMA games scheduled for October 24 in Accra will have teams from the Accra Psychiatric, Pantang and Ankaful Hospitals.
It is being organised in partnership with the French Embassy on the theme “Suicide Prevention Through Social Inclusion and Sports”.
