The Joy Clean Ghana Campaign task force was met with toilet from homes being emptied into major city drains at North Kanaeshie, a suburb of Accra, Wednesday.
According to JoyNews’ Nancy Emefa Dzradosi, although the place serves as a market centre and transportation hub for many tourist and Ghanaians who visit Accra, checks by sanitation inspectors around the drain revealed faecal matter at the edges of the drain with tubes from homes channelled into it.
Deepening the advocacy for clean communities, JoyNews, a brand under The Multimedia Group, has launched the Clean Ghana Campaign to rally citizens to their civic responsibilities.
The team made up of journalists, security officers, public health authorities and sanitation officers, including District Assembly officers, make unannounced visits to localities with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to check on the state of sanitation.
The visit by the team to North Kaneshie on Wednesday also revealed that at the Glory Christian Fellowship, a church, rainwater had been trapped on top of a septic tank, causing a powerful stench and creating a breeding hub for mosquitoes
Away from that, at a popular drinking spot, the team found akpeteshie, the locally brewed gin, laced with unwholesome substances.
Some 50 meters away from this, was another pub with similar products in addition to expired drinks.
Nancy Emefa Dzradosi reports that seven individuals were given 48 hours to improve their environments or risk being dragged to court.
In a related development, the woman arrested for selling and storing food near a toilet at Mantse Agbona, a suburb of Accra, has been fined by the Sanitation and Motor Court.
The La-based court presided over by Justice Juliet Duadu, fined the accused, Vivían Aryeetey, ¢1,200.
Also, the Assemblyman for James Town, Joseph Addo, has been charged with assault following an attack on JoyNews’ Photojournalist, David Andoh.
He pleaded not guilty and has been granted bail in the sum of GH₵5,000 with two sureties.
Mr Andoh who was part of the media team embarking on the 'Clean Ghana' campaign was assaulted for taking pictures of insanitary conditions at Mantse Agbona.
