Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo was named the world player of the year by the magazine 'World Soccer' after journalists from around the world voted in a poll.

The Portuguese star was a clear winner and finished ahead of both Leo Messi and Franck Ribery, who came second and third respectively.

Ronaldo, who won the award in 2008 (the same year he won the Ballon d’Or), notched up a total of 1,075 votes, ahead of Messi’s 926 and Ribery’s 870, in a carbon copy of the contenders for FIFA’s Ballon d’Or award, to be announced next month.

The rest of the poll’s top 10 was made up of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Arjen Robben, Neymar, Philipp Lahm, Robin Van Persie, Robert Lewandowski and Gareth Bale, while Andrés Iniesta was the first Spanish player, in tenth place.

Jupp Heynckes was voted manager of the year after leading Bayern Munich to an historic treble. The German coach finished ahead of Jurgen Klopp, Diego Pablo Simeone, Alex Ferguson and Vicente Del Bosque.
