Social media was on fire over the weekend after someone posted a wedding invitation that indicated there would be no reception.
Although the couple eventually got surprised by some friends and family with a wedding reception, social media has been split into pieces, with users taking sides and others criticising the couple.
The couple – Blessing Ijeoma and Adewale Olalekan
Heart-warming!
Remember the couple that trended over their wedding IV which had 'NO RECEPTION'? We'll they were suprised with a wedding reception which was all paid for by his mentors, family and friends. pic.twitter.com/EiVyMqx4VJ — iamOdino (@TweetNaijaBlog) September 3, 2019
Some suggested it was important to have the reception with family and friends there to celebrate the special day.
“It goes beyond food, drinks and dance,” some users suggested.
Others were glad the couple, for whatever reason that pushed their decision, to avoid the cost that came along with having a wedding reception.
@OkelolaSamuel2 tweeted, “I applaud and even respect you. It is your wedding and not ‘their’. When it's their turn, they should do what they like. The pressure has no enough pressure to put you under pressure.”
Another user @birrexy thought weddings were so expensive these days, it is not always necessary to do an elaborate wedding.
However, @jackiebchipotle believes couples put a lot of pressure on themselves expecting guests to help “fund” their expenses after throwing lavish receptions.
“Like if you invite me to your wedding, I assume it’s because you consider me as someone you want to have there to witness a big event in your life. Not bc [because] you expect me to fund the party you envisioned. Have it in the backyard for all I care, guests don’t ask for the extravagance,” he wrote.
The groom, however, says regardless of the insults, rage and divisiveness their decision brought, he is happy his new wife was not bothered.
So the weekend was full of drama as our wedding IV trended because of our #NoReception decision. I'm glad my wife is laughing about it now, because it wasn't funny over the weekend. Thanks to everyone that insulted or defended us, we're happy with our decision. pic.twitter.com/wNRhmPQ8BL

With my little experience of going to weddings in Nigeria, over 80% of guests actually attend for the food
They don't even pay attention to the program & every other things. I was in charge of the Drinks at one of my Uncle's wedding this year so I know What's Up😒#NoReception — Kolapo Imam ✪ (@PiousGeek) September 3, 2019

You are a role model to many 30something folks building their life and thinking how they will settle down without being indebted

People were insulting you? For your own wedding? Your own money you didn't want to waste? 😂😂😂
Use the money to go for one mad honeymoon location and have a good time abeg... Post pictures too, so they can cry again...😅 — kume Akpubi (@Lost_Samuraii) September 2, 2019
There has never been any wedding reception in the world that earned an award as the best. Even the so called biggest wedding reception with the highest number of Presidents in attendance is no where today. Apologies to Prince Charles. You have brought a new economic revolution

Waooo Boss. Never knew it was you. You”™ve started a great movement and am so proud of this. Now I know the decision is beyond lack of funds but is going to save many of unnecessary spending. #NoReception

people who think this is controversial asked their friends and family to pay for their dinner and drinks at the wedding because being invited is an honour in itself and also demanding a present within a specific high price bracket hahaha
— hello (@hellohmylove) August 29, 2019
No. People invite you because they like you and because they know you'll give a good gift. More so the latter. The entire point of a reception is to get money and gifts. That's all a wedding is a party for free shit. You're already married by the time your wedding rolls around.

I'd seriously have a no electronics rule at my wedding. Like don't bring your damn phone out til the reception if at all. I invite you to share my day with me, not plaster it all over your IG.

I had a no kid wedding. Our reasoning was that the ceremony is basically live theatre, and kids/babies don't know not to be disruptive; and the (evening) reception is basically a party, which we wouldn't invite kids to anyway

I”™ve seen a couple that survive on 60k salary monthly. If she isn”™t complaining and you have a roof over your head, don”™t loose a good woman. You mustn”™t do an elaborate wedding. I mean there”™s a wedding invite trending with no reception.

Just saw a wedding invite that clearly stated ”˜NO RECEPTION”™. I had to applaud them. Reception is where all the stress and money sinks in. It”™s too much. I had a garden wedding and even that was turned into a fiasco cos our parents printed their own cards😥😥ðŸ˜ðŸ˜

Lol I love what Nigerian wedding are morphing into. From 1000 people carnival to:
Invite only Family only Now it's "No reception" I'm here for it! — Amaka (@AmakaAnne_) August 30, 2019
We opened act together for travel, tiny day, and wedding. The reception is gonna be ridiculous like 250 people deep probs 200 cuz like 40% usually say no to an invite. I'm inviting so many people I wanna celebrate with its gross. I should have a red carpet at the cocktail hr 💅ðŸ¾

Africans:
Will you have an wedding that is "open to anyone to attend" with relaxed security or will you have an invite only wedding with strict security? (Trying to see something) — simone | #BackAPoetsSpace (@leizenomis) August 25, 2019
I told my brother that I want to have a strict invite only policy at my wedding so randomers don't attend.
Whereas my brother said he will have an open wedding where he doesn't mind if others invite others, as long as his loved ones are there, he doesn't care who else is there — simone | #BackAPoetsSpace (@leizenomis) August 25, 2019
Lol in this economy? No thanks. I wouldn't mind my church ceremony being open but reception will be invite only.

For me, even the ceremony has to be invite only. I can't be having random people watching me say my vowsðŸ˜

Thank you for showing us that it can really be done, especially here in Nigeria wih our #owambe mentality. Congratulations to you and your bride. I wish you much happiness and bliss!
